Caribbean Airlines chairman resignation prompts review

Trinidad's Transport Minister Devant Maharaj on Wednesday met with members of the board of directors of the state-owned Caribbean Airlines Limited (CAL) after receiving a resignation letter from its chairman, George Nicholas.

Maharaj would not say whether the resignation had been accepted, but in a statement confirmed that he had held talks with other CAL board of directors to get a better understanding of the current issues, and determine thereafter the direction to take.

The Trinidad Guardian newspaper had reported Wednesday that Nicholas, who has had a stormy 10-month period as chief overseer of the state-owned airline, had resigned and quoted Maharaj as saying that he was "in receipt of his letter, but I cannot say anything more".

Nicholas's tenure has been highlighted by public conflicts with the then Works and Transport Minister Austin Jack Warner, the controversial dismissal of the airline's chief executive officer, Captain Ian Brunton, and the acquisition of Air Jamaica routes and aircraft.

Jamaica owns 16 per cent of CAL/Air Jamaica and has one representative on the board, Dennis Lalor.
