HOT SPRINGS, Ark. — The pilot of a single-engine air tanker says the plane appeared to be working normally before losing altitude and crashing in a residential area of Hot Springs.

Pilot Mark Harting of Tucson, Ariz., suffered minor injuries in the Friday afternoon crash. No one on the ground was hurt when the plane clipped the roof of a home before crashing into a yard.

The aircraft was carrying water to dump on a nearby wildfire when it went down shortly after takeoff.

Harting told The Sentinel-Record that the plane's engine was operating normally — but the aircraft lost altitude despite his releasing water in order to lighten the load.

The plane is owned by Western Pilot Service and was under contract to the Arkansas Forestry Commission.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.
