Federal Aviation Administration officials said three people who were on their way to Jefferson County died in a plane crash.

The FAA called off the search just after noon on Tuesday. Authorities said the plane was found in Millersburg in Holmes County, Ohio.

Officials said the small Piper Apache plane was in Holmes County on Monday and was supposed to land at the Jefferson County Airpark on Monday.

Three people were on board the plane, including a woman who was flying back to the Ohio Valley to visit someone in the hospital.

The woman's family waited at the airpark Monday morning, but the plane never arrived. On Monday afternoon, officials at the Jefferson County airport alerted authorities.

"Around 4:30, we made a call in to the flight services. We handed it off to the proper authorities," said Jason Whanger, airport manager.

According to airpark officials, the pilot filed a flight plan but the tracking service flightaware.com indicated the aircraft was diverted from several airports, including in Columbus and Carroll County.

Officials said they tracked the plane and believe it circled the Harrison County Airport, which it wasn't supposed to do. After that, it dropped off the tracking system in the Bowerston area.

On Tuesday morning, crews including the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the FAA, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office and U.S. Air Force Search and Rescue team organized in the Bowerston area to search for the plane.
