MINING giant Xstrata Coal has pumped $125,000 into the Capricorn Helicopter Rescue Service.

Yesterday the service’s CEO Kay Becker said the support was welcome as the organisation tries to raise the $2 million it needs each year to keep the helicopter in the air (the Queensland Government also puts in $2 million).

Ms Becker said there had been concerns financial support for the service could drop as the community went through tough times since January’s flood.

Fortunately it doesn’t appear this has happened.

January was the busiest month the helicopter service has had and sent operational costs skyrocketing.

Ms Becker said with water in the helicopter hangar the chopper was relocated to Rockhampton’s heritage village.

She said during the floods the chopper service helped people who thought they would never need assistance.

“One day we flew eight trips to Gracemere,” Ms Becker said.

“People never know when they will need the service.”

She said Xstrata and BMA were both long-term supporters.

Since 2005 Xstrata has donated $875,000.
