The Indonesian National Air Carriers Association (Inaca) says many airports throughout the nation are catering for a higher level of passenger traffic than they were designed to handle.
Inaca scheduled flights chairman Syafril Nasution said four main airports in Indonesia faced capacity problems last year.
“The airports include Soekarno-Hatta in Tangerang, which has a capacity for 22 million passengers but had to accommodate 40 million passengers in 2010,” Syafril said in Inaca’s general meeting on Thursday.
Other troubled airports include Polonia in Medan which has a capacity to serve 900,000 passengers, but had to accommodate 4.9 million people last year; Ngurah Rai in Bali with a capacity for 1.5 million but had to accommodate 9.5 million, and Juanda in Surabaya with a capacity for 6 million but served 11 million people.
Meanwhile, Hasanuddin airport in Makassar, which has an actual capacity to serve 7 million people only served 5 million people in 2010.
This situation has affected the operation of all aircraft using these airports and had caused the delays to flight arrivals and departures, Syafril said.
Soekarno-Hatta airport manager PT Angkasa Pura II is working on a plan to increase the international airport’s capacity to serve up to 65 million passengers a year. The expansion plan includes the addition of one runway and is expected to be complete by 2014-2015.
