OCEAN CITY, Maryland (7News) — Five people have been rescued after a Cessna 182 Skylane crashed into the Sinepuxent Bay near Ocean City Municipal Airport Sunday afternoon.

Maryland State Police say the crash happened in Worcester County adjacent to the airport shortly before 2 p.m.

Investigators say preliminarily the pilot of the plane, later identified as Matthew Cortigiani, 25, of Utah, said smoke filled the cabin as he tried to shut off the Cessna 182 Skylane.

He redirected the plane to the airport to try to land it and the aircraft bounced on the runway before crashing into the bay east of the end of the runway, according to police.

One of the five occupants of the plane was sent to be treated for injuries at TidalHealth Peninsula Regional Hospital in Salisbury. The occupants were pulled onto civilian boats and medically evaluated.

Maryland Natural Resources Police and the United States Coast Guard provided assistance during the incident. The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration were notified and an FAA representative responded to the scene.

The FAA continues to investigate the cause of the crash.
