TULSA, Oklahoma (KTUL) -- Emergency crews responded to a single-engine plane crash at the Tahlequah Municipal Airport on Friday morning.

The pilot was the only person on board.

Leaving from Skiatook heading southeast, firefighters say the pilot was coming in to refuel.

As he made his way down to the landing strip, the aircraft was going too fast.

Authorities say the pilot slammed on the brakes, causing the plane to flip over itself and land upside down.

“Firefighters found the pilot was crawling out of the plane," said Chief Casey Baker of the Tahlequah Fire Department. "They assisted him in getting out of the plane. He had trauma to his head and neck area."

Firefighters said the pilot was sent to a local hospital – then life-flighted to a Tulsa hospital.

“They were concerned with his spine and head trauma,” said Baker.

You can see the busted windshield with dirt splattered across it.

The propeller is completely exposed – dirt and grass stuck inside of it.

“There was some fuel leakage we contained the leakage,” said Baker.

The airport was shut down for a few hours as crews cleaned up.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol and the FAA will take over the investigation into the crash.

TAHLEQUAH, Oklahoma  — A plane arriving at Tahlequah Municipal Airport on Friday crashed, hurting at least one person, airport officials say.

OHP says the 1979 Air Tractor was operated by 27-year-old Tyler Sherrick of Welch, Oklahoma.

Airport Manager Kelly Crittenden says Sherrick was taken to the hospital after the crash.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol and fire crews came out to the airport.

The pilot was landing on a private grass strip that had not been used for several weeks during which time the grass had grown "considerably". Upon landing, the tall grass caught the left spray boom which resulted in the airplane traveling off the side of the runway into a wheat field. The pilot reported the airplane traveled 25 to 30 feet after contacting the tall grass, and it came to rest 90 degrees from the touchdown heading. The right wing and empennage were substantially damaged during the event.
