WALLA WALLA – A single-engine plane landed safely in a field northeast of Wine County Golf Club Sunday evening.
Firefighters responded to the area of Loney Road and Sudbury Road at about 6:22 p.m. where it was reported a plane made a controlled landing in a field with powerlines down.
When crews arrived, there were small grass fires surrounding power poles. Those fires were quickly put out.
“The pilot stated that he was flying the aircraft when he decided to low fly over the field. He said that the aircraft was paralleling the roadway approximately 500 feet away from the power lines that run east and west. The pilot stated that he did not see the power line which ran north and south, off the main power lines,” Walla Walla County Undersheriff Joe Klundt said.
The plane flew into the power line causing damaged to the windshield. The pilot managed to make a controlled landing in the field about 1 mile west of the downed power line.
The pilot and passenger were not injured.
Power was knock out for about an hour for 12 to 15 Columbia REA members before linemen could repair the damaged lines.
