ROY — As federal officials investigate a weekend plane crash, the two occupants of the aircraft are continuing their recoveries.

The Piper single-engine aircraft crashed about 3:30 p.m. Sunday, hitting a billboard next to I-15 in Roy about a half-mile southwest of Ogden-Hinckley Airport shortly after taking off.

Two people on board were critically injured. A third person who tried to help the victims was also taken to local hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Several people on social media have identified one of the victims as Bryce Ransom. He suffered multiple broken bones, including both ankles, his sternum, ribs, nose, hand and knee, according to a GoFundMe fundraiser* set up for him.

Ransom has two children and his wife is due to give birth to their third child any day, according to friends on Facebook.

The name of the other victim was not immediately released.

The tail number on the plane is the same as a plane that was forced to make an emergency landing on I-15 near Ogden in May 2018.

In that incident, a flight instructor and a student were in the plane when it experienced a mechanical issue, according to the Utah Highway Patrol. The instructor made the decision to land on the freeway, and hit a car while landing. No one was injured.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Security Administration will investigate Sunday’s crash.

ROY — Two men were critically injured Sunday afternoon in a small plane crash in Weber County, officials said.

The crash occurred off southbound I-15 in Roy after the plane hit a billboard, the Utah Highway Patrol said.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the plane crashed about a half-mile southwest of Ogden-Hinckley Airport soon after it departed.

One person was flown to a hospital and two people were transported via ambulance.

A video taken after the crash shows bystanders parked off the freeway and a crowd of people surrounding the smoking plane to apparently help.

One person who stopped to help suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to a hospital for treatment, said Roy police officer Stuart Hackworth.

Hackworth said officers were grateful for those who stopped to help immediately after the crash, but asked that bystanders to clear the area while first responders were working on scene.

No other injuries were reported.

Southbound I-15 was closed in the area of the crash. The UHP asked people traveling I-15 north to drive cautiously and not slow down to observe the crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate.

OGDEN — A small plane made an emergency landing on the freeway Saturday in Weber County.

Officials said the Piper PA-28R-180 Arrow departed Ogden-Hinckley Regional Airport just before 8 a.m. and was forced to make an emergency landing on Interstate 15 at 5600 South. Local authorities said there were two people onboard the single-engine plane.

According to the Utah Highway Patrol, a 19-year old flight instructor was with a student when the aircraft experienced a mechanical issue. It was then the instructor made a bold decision to land the distressed aircraft in the southbound lanes of the freeway, explained Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Andy Battenfield.

"The female instructor took control of the plane and flew under the Riverdale Road bridge structure," he said. "While landing, she struck 2004 Toyota Camry with four occupants."

He noted the aircraft’s wing struck and shattered the rear window of the vehicle, but no injuries were reported. Damage to the plane and the car were minimal, he said.

The roadway was blocked for about 90 minutes. Officials are investigating what prompted the aircraft to have to make the impromptu landing.

RIVERDALE – No injuries were reported after a small airplane made an emergency landing on I-15 southbound in Riverdale Saturday morning.

According to Utah Highway Patrol, a 19-year-old female flight instructor was forced to bring the plane down just before 8 a.m. on the freeway near milepost 339 shortly after take off.

In audio obtained by Fox 13, the pilot can be heard speaking to the control tower at Ogden-Hinckley Airport.

“…the freeway, going down,” the pilot said. “Now we’re on the freeway… we’re going to need some help getting off the freeway.”

The plane took off from the Ogden-Hinckley Airport but the pilot says she was forced to bring it down when it suffered  “a loss of power.”

“After takeoff we were not climbing and we started to descend and so we did emergency gear down and hit the runway… uh, not the runway I hit the road,” the pilot said in the recording.

UHP says the plane did collide with one vehicle but no injuries have been reported.

“None in the airplane, we don’t know if we hit a car,” the pilot told control in the recording. “We don’t believe so, we just think we hit hard. But we’re going to need some help.”

According to UDOT right lanes were closed following the incident but have since been reopened.

UHP reports the plane was taken back to the Ogden-Hinckley Airport in good condition.
