PLAINWELL, Mich. — A pilot escaped without any serious injuries after his plane went off a runway near a busy West Michigan highway.

He said winds this afternoon caused his Cavalier plane to overshoot the runway at the Plainwell Airport near U.S. Route 131.

Kenneth Dannenberg, the pilot from Holland, said, “I am glad that I am OK and glad that it isn't worse than it is and can be repaired.”

The plane went through a fence into a ditch.

Dannenberg said, “I just ran out of runway and ideas at the same time.”

The crash did not disrupt traffic on the highway.

GUN PLAIN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities are investigating what caused an aircraft to overshoot a runway near US-131 in Allegan County.

It happened Tuesday at the Plainwell Municipal Airport on 10th Street and 106th Avenue, near the highway.

24 Hour News 8 arrived to find the aircraft resting in tall grasses near a busted fence for the airport.

The Allegan County Sheriff’s Department is handling the case. Investigators say no one was injured.

This isn’t the first incident at the airport. In May 2017, a Cessna carrying three sixth-graders on a field trip crashed feet away from the highway when the pilot overshot the runway. The pilot and one of the students were taken to the hospital with minor injuries; the two other students were treated at the scene and released.

Before that, a Holland man was killed when his small plane hit a FedEx truck on northbound US-131 just west of the airport's runway on Sept. 23, 2011. In 2009, two men died in a small plane crash at the airport.
