After the Frederick County Board of Supervisors raised the tax on aircraft weighing under 20,000 pounds by 5,000%, the Winchester Regional Airport Authority is seeking to meet with those local government leaders to discuss their decision.
The vote took place back in August, and raised taxes from 1 cent per $100 of assessed value on smaller aircrafts to 50 cents.
The measure was an attempt by supervisors to generate extra revenue for the county, which is estimated to be between $60,000 and $70,000, but airport authority board members are worrying that it could drive away both existing and prospective tenants of the general aviation airport.
Airport Authority Chairman Gene Fisher was quoted as saying that at the suggestion of Board of Supervisors Chairman Charles DeHaven Jr. and members of the county’s Economic Development Authority, he will come up with a list of questions to be discussed at the next Frederick County Board of Supervisors meeting.
Fisher said that at least two EDA members have expressed concerns over what the tax will do to the overall economic development of the airport; by comparison, Manassas has a slim aircraft tax of $0.00001 cents per $100 of assessed value, and Leesburg’s Executive Airport has a tax rate of one-tenth of a cent per $100 of assessed value.
