On August 6, 2017, at 1551 central daylight time, an amateur-built Roger M Allen RA2 airplane, N952RA, stalled and impacted terrain near Hector, Minnesota. The commercial pilot and passenger were seriously injured and the airplane was substantially damaged. The airplane was registered to and operated by a private individual under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 as a personal flight. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the flight, which operated without a flight plan. The local flight was originating from the Hector Municipal Airport (1D6), at the time of the accident.

A witness reported that during the airplane's takeoff, the airplane appeared to stall, descend, and impact terrain.

The airplane was retained for further examination.



Two men were injured Sunday in Hector when the experimental aircraft they were flying stalled and nose-dived into the ground from 15 to 20 feet in the air.

According to the Renville County Sheriff's Office, a Allen RA2 experimental amateur-built aircraft flown by Gary Bipes, 75, attempted to take off from the Hector Municipal Airport just before 3:45 p.m. Bipes was taken to Renville County Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

A passenger, Eduardo Aguas-Fuentes, 52, sustained serious injuries as a result of the crash. He was flown to North Memorial Medical Center.

The Sheriff's Office, Federal Aviation Administration and Hector police are investigating.

HECTOR — A pilot and a passenger were injured in a plane crash Sunday afternoon in Renville County.

According to the Renville County Sheriff's Office, the accident happened around 3:45 p.m. when a Allen RA2 aircraft, operated by Gary Bipes, was attempting to take off at the Hector Municipal Airport.

When the plane was about 15-20 feet in the air, it stalled and nose-dived into the ground.

Bipes, 75, was transported to Renville County Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

A passenger, Eduardo Aguas-Fuentes, 52, Fuentes sustained serious injuries and was flown to North Memorial Medical Center via North Memorial Air Care.

The Hector Police Department, Renville County Sheriff's Office, Hector Ambulance Service and Buffalo Lake Ambulance Service assisted at the scene of the crash.

The Renville County Sheriff's Office, Federal Aviation Administration and Hector Police Department are continuing its investigation.

Hector, MN) A pilot and passenger were injured when the ultralight airplane they were in crashed on takeoff yesterday (Sunday) afternoon.

At about 3:45 PM, the Renville County Sheriff’s Office received a report of an airplane crash at the Hector Municipal Airport. 

The preliminary crash investigation revealed a Allen RA2 experimental amateur-built aircraft, flown by 75-year-old Gary Bipes, was attempting to take off at the Hector Municipal Airport. When the aircraft was about 15-20 feet in the air, it stalled and nose-dived into the ground. 

52-year-old Eduardo Aguas-Fuentes was a passenger on the aircraft at the time of the accident.  He suffered serious injuries and was flown to North Memorial Medical Center for treatment.

Bipes was taken to Renville County Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The crash is under investigation.
