City may vote to ground airport board: Greenville Municipal - Majors Field (KGVT), Hunt County, Texas

The City of Greenville’s Airport Advisory Board may be about to become history.

The Greenville City Council is scheduled Tuesday to consider a recommendation from City Manager Massoud Ebrahim to disband the panel, as its services are no longer necessary under the city’s agreement with L-3 Mission Integration.

A vote is scheduled as part of the regular session agenda, starting at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Municipal Building, 2821 Washington Street. The work session agenda is set to begin at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

The Airport Advisory Board was created by the council in 1975 to assist in the development and marketing of Majors Field, the City of Greenville Municipal Airport.

The seven-member board does not exercise any executive power or authority, but conducts studies relative to the development and needs of the airport, then makes recommendations directly to the council.

In a memo to the council, Ebrahim referred to the 30-year lease agreement entered into between the city and L-3 in October 2013.

L-3 is to pay millions of dollars per year to lease property at Majors Field, to be directed back to keeping the airport as a self-sustaining facility.

In turn, the defense contractor is to take over almost all of the operations at the airport, including the city’s terminal building.

Ebrahim noted how there is an on-site Airport General Aviation Manager, who interacts with all tenants at the airport and addresses all issues or requests as appropriate.

“The purpose of the Airport Advisory Board is currently being achieved by more efficient means while maintaining more effective communications through the Airport General Aviation Manager,” Ebrahim said recommending that an airport sub-committee council oversee and monitor any developments and requirements of the airport as needed.
