US Airways jet diverts to Phoenix for mechanical issue

A US Airways jet flying cross-country was diverted to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on Friday after a mechanical issue was reported, an official said.

US Airways flight 796 had taken off from Los Angeles and was on its way to Philadelphia.

An engine warning light turned on in flight and, for safety purposes, the plane was diverted to Sky Harbor after circling and burning fuel, said Andrew Christie, an American Airlines spokesman.

The plane landed safely shortly after 1:30 p.m. and passengers will be moved to another aircraft for continuation to Philadelphia, Christie said.

The plane was carrying 142 passengers and six crew members and was not completely full, he said.
