Air India emergency landing at Gannavaram Airport

VIJAYAWADA: An Air India plane made an emergency landing at the Gannavaram airport here around 7:49 pm on Thursday after sparks were detected in its right engine.

The plane, which was going to Delhi via Hyderabad, took off at 7:39 pm. As it flew up to a height of 100 ft, sparks emanated from its engine.

The Air Traffic Control (ATC) detected the sparks and communicated the same to the pilot. As per the ATC instructions, the pilot brought back the plane safely to the airport. About 60 passengers were on board.

“The ATC and the pilot have acted swiftly and averted a mishap. All the passengers are safe,” said airport director Raj Kishore.

Later, the aircraft engineer tested the plane and confirmed that a technical snag has grounded the engine. “Unless it is fixed, the plane cannot take off,” Raj Kishore said.

Air India is making alternative travel arrangements for the passengers. It is said that some of them have decided to make an overnight stay in Vijayawada and travel Friday. Some IAS officers are said to be on the flight.
