Incident occurred September 08, 2014 at Wausau Downtown Airport (KAUW), Wisconsin

The Wausau Fire Department is responding to the downtown Wausau airport for the report of single engine plane being diverted to the airport for the report of smoke in the cockpit.

The report came in just after 4:30 p.m. The pilot of a single engine plane approaching the Wausau area from the north noticed black smoke in the cockpit.

The plane was diverted from its original flight plan to the downtown Wausau airport to execute an emergency landing.

There were four people on the plane including the pilot. Everybody is safe.

Stay tuned to NewsChannel 7 for the very latest on this developing story.

WAUSAU – A single-engine, four-passenger plane made a precautionary landing Monday afternoon at the Wausau municipal airport because it had smoke in the cockpit, said Airport Manager John Chmiel.

The pilot had been flying north of Wausau about 4:30 p.m. when the plane was diverted to the Downtown Airport, which was the closest place it could land, Chmiel said.

The Wausau Fire Department and the plane arrived at about the same time.

Three passengers were on board and nobody was injured, Chmiel said. The plane landed safely.

Chmiel would not say what kind of plane it was.

The plane was already in the hangar by 5 p.m. and non-emergency aircraft personnel at the airport were looking into the cause of the smoke.

If the problem is corrected right away the plane could leave soon, Chmiel said, but ultimately they have to stay until the plane is airworthy.

He said he did not know where the plane was coming from or going to.
