A pilot who escaped uninjured from a plane crash along with a passenger has cited crosswind as being a significant factor in the cause of the accident.
This week the Air Accident Investigation Branch published a report in relation to the incident which took place on August 27 last year.
The report was largely based on information supplied by the 53-year-old pilot, who has not been identified, in his initial Aircraft Accident Report Form.
The latest report states that at about 1.45pm the pilot encountered problems as he attempted to land his Piper PA-28-161 Cherokee Warrior II, G-Burt at Enstone Aerodrome on a flight from Denham. It reads: “The aircraft landed with a crosswind from the right.
As the nose wheel was lowered on to the runway surface, the aircraft veered to the left.
“The pilot was unable to straighten the aircraft before it struck a fence post to the side of the paved area.”
The left wing of the plane struck a fence post and the aircraft came to a stop with fence posts and wire wrapped around both wings and the propeller, which caused the engine to stop.
At this point the pilot, who had 87 hours of flying experience at the time of the accident, and his passenger escaped uninjured through the main door.
The report concluded: “The pilot considered that the crosswind had been a significant factor in the accident.”
