CAPE MAY AIRPORT – Naval
Air Station Wildwood (NASW) Aviation Museum, located at the Cape May
Airport, is proud to announce the museum recently received funding from
the 1772 Foundation Grant Program administered by the New Jersey
Historic Trust. The grant in the amount of $15,000 requires a 100% match
on behalf of the museum. The total project cost of $30,000 will enable
the museum to repair and restore damaged areas of the roof on the
hangar’s northwest side. Restoration work should be complete by March 1,
2013.
The 1772 Foundation provides financial support for
targeted restoration projects throughout the United States and is
committed to preserving American historical treasures. Hangar #1 is
listed on the National and State of New Jersey’s registers of historic
places. The Navy all-wood double wide hangar was one of only six
dive-bomb training facilities in the United States during WWII. The
museum also houses a General Motors built TBM Avenger which was the same
type of aircraft piloted by President George H.W. Bush in the Pacific
Theatre.
Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum is located in
Historic Hangar #1 at the Cape May Airport, New Jersey. Cape May
Airport was formerly Naval Air Station Wildwood, which served as a World
War II dive-bomber training center. The museum is dedicated to the 42
airmen who perished while training at Naval Air Station Wildwood between
1943 and 1945.
