According to the Herald Sun,
a massive storm rolled into the southeastern part of Queensland
Australia on Saturday, causing flooding, wind damage and power outages
in the city of Brisbane.
Nearly 30,000 were left without power due to the storm, and several roadways were closed due to flooding. The Australian reports there were more than 11,000 lightning strikes reported in the Brisbane area, with an additional 22,000 lightning strikes in areas southeast of the city.
A reddit user named "mongaloid" posted the picture, saying his mother had taken the photo as she was preparing to board the Air New Zealand passenger jet bound for Fiji. Lightning strikes to planes are not unusual.
A CNN report says every plane in the U.S. commercial fleet is struck by lightning about once per year.
