Roanoke Regional (KROA), Virginia: 'Plane fire' at airport part of firefighter training

Firefighters at Roanoke Regional Airport are training today with a simulator, an event that some passersby might mistake for a plane fire.

The firefighters are working with a simulator that looks like a small fuselage, airport spokeswoman Sherry Wallace said. The simulator is set on fire so firefighters can practice rescuing dummies and extinguishing the flames with foam, she said.

The training is happening on the far end of the cargo ramp. Drivers on Airport Road might catch a glimpse of the training and mistake it for an emergency, Wallace said.

The airport contracts with Pro-Tec, based in Green Bay, Wis., for its fire services.
