Air Asia Could Fly Bandung-Bangkok Route

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:  Air Asia Indonesia is exploring possibilities to open a new direct route from Bandung to Bangkok. “The possibility is over 70 percent, hopefully,” President Director for Air Asia Indonesia Dharmadi said in Bandung, on Thursday, April 26, 2012.

According to Dharmadi, his airline is seriously considering the route given that there are no fiscal fees for inter-ASEAN flights. One of the issues facing though is the capacity of Bandung's Husein Sastranegara airport for wide bodied Airbus A320 aircraft. The airport can only withstand the burden of 170 passengers out of 180 passengers, the capacity of the aircraft. “We are evaluating the pricing based on 170 passengers per plane,” he explained. He hoped that the Husein Sastaranegara airport management expedites the hardening of the runaway to withstand the full capacity.

He also said that besides Bangkok, AirAsia Indonesia is looking into other promising routes such as flights from Bandung to China, and Brunei Darussalam, which has great potentials given the large number of Bandung natives (around 40,000) working in the country. For China, he said, there are four flights from Bandung via Kuala Lumpur. “You can continue to Szenzen, Hong Kong, Macau or Beijing.”

Today, AirAsia launched a number of new routes from Bandung to Pekanbaru, Riau, and to Penang, Malaysia. The ticket reservation for the routes is opened today and the maiden flights are scheduled for the coming May 26. For the new routes, the airline has allocated 1 out of 4 new Airbus A320 aircraft scheduled to be delivered from its factory in Touluse, France. The Malaysian owned airline also set aside cheap tickets of Rp 149,000 for Pekanbaru and Rp 199,000 Penang routes for promotion.

Dharmadi also disclosed that domestic route to Pekanbaru is especially targeted to expatriates and locals working in a number of foreign oil companies spread across Riau. He said that AirAsia is one of the few airlines listed in the companies' insurance schemes. He hope that the two routes can help boost tourism sectors of relevant cities.
