General Civil Aviation Authority Launches AviPedia

Abu Dhabi, UAE: AviPedia, "Aviation Encyclopedia" the new electronic learning center of aviation, was officially launched by HE Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director General of the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority. It aims to enhance and strengthen the knowledge and professional awareness in most aviation aspects.

AviPedia is a dynamic enterprise that contains educational materials and information, documentaries and audio-visual content which is made available to the Sheikh Zayed Air Navigation Center (SZC) staff. The program is well organized and user friendly in order to facilitate the use of the browser. This is to encourage staff to take advantage from the valuable training and educational data available.

AviPedia will take several phases, where the first phase was completed recently. It includes organizing the content in alphabetical order, and dividing the encyclopedia into six sections: Air Traffic Management, Aeronautical Information Management, Communication Navigation & Surveillance, Training, Safety & Quality, and last section is Others which is divided into five parts, Social, Scientific, Aviation, Technology and Languages. Moreover, the existing Encyclopedia of Aviation will be electronically incorporated in the Avipedia, making it easier to access and faster to get needed information.

HE Said Al Suwaidi pointed out that GCAA's ultimate goal of such project is to facilitate the access to information for GCAA staff to enhance staff's knowledge and experience, stressing that further stages will witness AviPedia being used on a larger scale, in other civil aviation organizations within UAE. In addition to the ongoing training opportunities provided by GCAA to the staff, we provide additional and continuous training facility for self education, which has proved to be vital component of the training and education business in the world.

The first phase of the Avipedia was accomplished in five months, according to Mr. Ahmed Al Jallaf, Acting Executive Director of Air Navigation Services, solely by a team of the GCAA Shaikh Zayed Centre staff, dedicated to implement the new library to the fullest. He stated that work is in progress for other phases of the program and it will continue during the coming months using the most professional scientific and electronic sources.
