National Air and Space Museum opens art exhibit showing history of Marine Corps aviation

WASHINGTON — The Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum is marking the 100th anniversary of U.S. Marine Corps aviation with an art exhibit retracing the history of military aviators.

The exhibit “Fly Marines!” opened Saturday and will be on view for a year. It includes 91 works for art from the Marine Corps Art Program that is managed by the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Virginia. The works include art for recruitment posters and paintings by prominent aviation artists.

John Glenn, one of the best-known Marine aviators, is featured in two portraits. One shows Glenn as a young Mercury astronaut and another as part of a space shuttle crew.

The exhibit shows combat scenes from World War I through the current Afghanistan war, as well as objects and uniforms.
