A former air traffic controller from Northern Virginia has been convicted of fraudulently obtaining about $700,000 in disability benefits.

Authorities said 52-year-old Raymond Deskins III was convicted of mail fraud and making false statements in federal court in Alexandria.

Deskins, a former controller with the Washington Air Route Traffic Control Center in Leesburg, was receiving disability benefits from 2005 to 2008, according to prosecutors. But during that time, he also worked as a construction foreman for a Sterling contracting company, even though he repeatedly said on Department of Labor forms that he wasn't engaging in any work activities.

Deskins, of Potomac Falls, was indicted in August. He is scheduled to be sentenced on May 4.
