Myrtle Beach Civil Air Patrol commander suspended pending outcome of investigation

Stephen Teachout

The Myrtle Beach commander of the South Carolina Civil Air Patrol who said Horry County would no longer receive aerial support after he was charged in an incident involving his confiscation of a laser from a 12-year-old boy remains suspended from duty pending the outcome of an internal investigation, said Emerson Smith, public information officer for CAP’s main office in Columbia.

Smith said Cmdr. Stephen Teachout has been suspended since the Oct. 12 incident, as is standard CAP procedure when an investigation is being conducted.

The CAP national headquarters at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Ala. is handling the investigation at this time, Smith added. He didn’t immediately have an idea when it would be finished.

The State Highway Patrol suspended one trooper for unprofessional conduct and cleared a second of wrongdoing after an internal investigation into a pair of traffic stops that led to claims of mistreatment and false arrest, the embattled law enforcement agency said Friday.

The two outcomes are Teachout could be reinstated to active duty, or terminated from the air patrol.
