Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Washington to hold aerospace jobs hearing in Seattle

Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., chair of the Aviation Operations, Safety and Security Subcommittee, will hold a field hearing Monday on aviation training needs and challenges.

Cantwell intends to look at the local and federal efforts in training for aerospace, which she said employs 83,700 people in Washington state, one sixth of the workers in the nation.

She said topics will include employer and worker needs, development and expansion of training programs, creating a pipeline of career ready students, lifelong learning strategies and government-industry partnerships.

The hearing will begin at 10 a.m. in the Museum of Flight, 9404 E. Marginal Way S., Seattle.

It will include speakers from Boeing, the engineer and technical workers union, the Machinists union, aerospace businesses in Yakima and Spokane, the University of Washington Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics , the Aerospace Joint Apprenticeship Committee and Edmonds and Spokane community colleges, and the Aviation High School in Des Moines.
