Feds: Marine stole 60,000 lbs. of scrap metal from Willow Grove Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base

A Marine sergeant has been charged with stealing approximately 60,000 pounds of materials, including aluminum helicopter landing pads and other metal worth $760,000, from the Willow Grove Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base and selling them for scrap.

According to military officials, Christopher M. Cook, 28, of Lakehurst, N.J., was part of Marine Wing Support Squadron 472, a reserve aviation ground support unit of the United States Marine Corps that was stationed at Willow Grove Naval Air Station, which officially closed last month.

The indictment alleges that 22 times from about Aug. 18, 2010 until Feb. 19, 2011, Cook drove a rented moving van onto the base, loaded it with stolen aluminum and other metals used for helicopter landing pads and drove it to a local scrap dealer. Cook received a total of $50,917 for the metal, according to the indictment.

Cook was indicted Tuesday and if convicted faces a possible sentence of 20 years in prison and a $500,000 fine.

Authorities said Cook used the money he received from the scrap dealer to pay for personal items, including travel expenses, restaurants and other entertainment, clothing and jewelry, and repairs to his truck.

Cook was charged with theft and destruction of government property.
