Instructor, student identified in skydiving tragedy. Mesquite Airport (67L), Nevada.

MESQUITE, NV (FOX5) -

Authorities Monday identified a skydiving instructor and his student who both died when their parachutes failed to open during a tandem dive over Mesquite Sunday.

The Clark County Coroner's office said Claudette Porter, 75, of North Las Vegas, and James Fonnesbeck, 60, of Weston, Id., died after crash landing near the Mesquite Municipal Airport Sunday morning.

Police said Fonnesbeck, a veteran skydive instructor, was taking Porter out for her first ever skydive when the accident happened. Both primary and back-up parachutes were not able to deploy, investigators said.

Fonnesbeck achieved minor fame nearly 20 years ago when he parachuted from a plane as part of the "Flying Elvis" group in the film "Honeymoon In Vegas."

Investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration are looking at possible causes into what led up to the parachuting accident.
