ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- Senator Charles Schumer is urging the FAA to approve the Onondaga Sheriff's Office's request for a commuter charter license. The license would allow its Air-1 chopper to charge for its flights.
If approved, it would relieve local taxpayers of heavy operating costs.
The Onondaga County legislature is expected to vote on funding levels for Air-1 when it considers the budget for the coming year next month.
If the FAA approves the license before then, it will assure legislators that Air-1 will begin to become self-sustaining. That would make it more likely for legislators to approve funding to keep Air-1 in the air.
