LISBON -The transmitter from a damaged plane at the Columbiana County Airport caught the attention of the Civil Air Patrol branch of the U.S. Air Force overnight.

According to sheriff's reports, Rick Nuwlath of Civil Air Patrol reported at 5:08 a.m. Thursday they had been at the Columbiana County Airport since 2:30 a.m. looking for an emergency locator transmitter signaling a problem with a plane.

Shortly after the call, the plane was located with mud on the propeller. After deputies examined it further, the plane was found to have damage to the front and one wing.

Examining the plane, another officer from Civil Air Patrol said the pilot of the plane probably tilted the plane forward, causing damage and that was setting the transmitter off. The transmitter was found and reset. The men then flew away.

The plane is believed to be the same one which ran off the side of a runway Wednesday afternoon and came to rest in a ravine. No one was injured during that crash of the Piper L-21B Super Cub.

The Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) were both notified by authorities at the time of the accident.

The emergency locator transmitter emits a distress signal letting authorities know the location of a possible plane crash.
