The search for a Marine Corp F18 fighter jet that went down over the Pacific Ocean ended early Thursday when two people were removed from the water near San Diego.
A rescue helicopter lifted the pair to safety after they were heard calling for help and flew them to Balboa Naval Medical Center in San Diego for medical treatment, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
There is no one else in the water as it was a two-seater jet, but a field of debris was seen in the water, according to the Coast Guard. There was no indication of what caused the accident, of the extent of injuries suffered by the two individuals.
The San Diego Coast Guard received a report from the Navy at 10:30 p.m. PT that an F-18 fighter jet went missing 58 miles southwest of Point Loma in San Diego, the U.S. Coast guard confirmed.
Spokesman Henry Dunphy says the aircraft was flying with another jet when contact with the plane was lost. Crews searched for the F/A-18C Hornet in the area about 60 miles southwest of San Diego and 35 miles west of Ensenada, Mexico.
The Coast Guard diverted two cutters -- one 378-foot ship and another 110-foot ship, a C130 plane and a helicopter to the scene to do search and rescue.
