Rugby World Cup makes long flights hard to find. New Zealand.

Bargain hunters looking for cheap holidays during the Rugby World Cup could be in luck flying out of the country but getting back in could be a problem.

Travel consultants spoken to by the Bay of Plenty Times said it was likely there would be cheap seats out of New Zealand but some flights into the country were sold out.

Harvey World Travel Tauranga manager David Cull said booking long-haul travel could be tricky at the beginning and end of the Cup.

"We're talking 85,000 visitors spread out over all sorts of times before and after. I would imagine the usual cheap seats could become more expensive due to availability," Mr Cull said.

Those waiting for bargain flights were advised to be patient and flexible.

Maree Webb, assistant manager at United Travel in Piccadilly Arcade, said more deals could be released next month.

"It's purely a waiting game. It's all controlled by the airlines. There are likely to be some last-minute deals for those who want to escape the country, but the last two weeks of the Rugby World Cup are the school holidays and it would be more difficult to get back in," Ms Webb said.

With people flying in for the tournament, Shane Kennedy of House of Travel Tauranga said there would be a lot of empty aircraft that have to go somewhere.

"In our view there will be some really good deals on the market, which are likely to be at short notice with quite restrictive dates and travel periods.

If you are looking for a deal and are flexible, there'll be some happy travellers," he said.
