St. Louis: China hub up for debate. (With Video)

Should St. Louis become a hub for trade with China?

Days before a special session of the legislature, debate on the topic is hitting fever pitch.

While Lambert isn't the passenger hub it once was, St. Louis officials still see potential in its under-utilized runways.

And so does China.

They're proposing a cargo hub here, importing Chinese goods in, and exporting Missouri goods out.

Just days before a special legislative session will discuss the tax incentives package for it, opponents gathered to air their concerns.

Billed as a forum, and put on by the Citizens Alliance for Missouri Patriots, a tea party group, the meeting had no proponents on the panel.

Much of the debate though centers around the tax credits being offered to freight forwarders and those building infrastructure around the airport.

Advocates the marketplace will actually determine how much are needed, and how much is paid out.

Build and ship first, then get the incentive.

Those on the Midwest China Hub Commission say they're hopeful this can work.

The special session starts Tuesday. And if the Aerotropolis Trade Act is passed, we could start seeing flights from China this fall.
