Donations sought for airport playground: New Bedford Regional Airport (KEWB), New Bedford, Massachusetts.

NEW BEDFORD — A plan unveiled Tuesday for a new city playground at the New Bedford Regional Airport will have children flying high.

The Atlantic Aviators, the local chapter of Women in Aviation International, shared plans for an aviation-themed public playground at the airport. The 95-by-30-foot play area will be built on the grassy space in front of the spectator parking lot, an area southwest of the control tower.

"We can't think of a better way to get kids involved in aviation," said Lisa Rodriguez, vice president of the Atlantic Aviators and Playground Committee chairwoman. "It's a wonderful asset to the community."

Included in the themed play pieces, designed for children ages 2 to 12, are a biplane climber with a cockpit, two aircraft spring riders, an 11-person Sway Fun glider that has room for two wheelchairs, and a control tower with a navigator panel, periscope, cloud climber and luggage climber.

The pieces will be erected on a Poured-in-Place rubber composite surface to increase safety and to prevent debris from getting on the runway. The smooth surface is also handicap-accessible.

Mayor Scott W. Lang spoke in support of the playground and airport, noting that the airport is a safe place for children and families to enjoy being outside. City Councilor Linda Morad was also on hand to voice her support.

"It's our vision to make the airport an educational center," said Michael Knabbe, chairman of the Airport Commission. He also noted that parents have taken children to the area to watch the planes landing and taking off for years, so the playground will add to that experience.

The project, which has been in the works for more than a year and a half, was designed by Nancy White of O'Brien & Sons Inc.

Thus far, the Atlantic Aviators have raised $64,000 and are still accepting donations. The groundbreaking is set for sometime in 2012, depending on funding.

The Atlantic Aviators is a recognized 501(c)(3) charitable organization formed in 2003. Donations can be sent to Atlantic Aviators, P.O. Box 50902, New Bedford, Mass. 02745.

"It's a great day for the city and the airport," Knabbe said.
