National Democratic Congress to Balance Account with Plane Cash – Sammy Awuku

SAMMY AWUKU, Deputy Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on all Ghanaians to kick against the decision by government to purchase five aircrafts for the presidency and military.

He alleged that the huge amount of money quoted by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government for purchase of the aircrafts and the building of a hangar for them was an attempt by the ruling party to raise money to balance its accounts after its profligate spending at the Sunyani congress.

The governing NDC last Wednesday sought parliamentary approval for a loan of over $250 million to purchase five new aircrafts and an amount of $17 million to build a hangar to house two of the aircrafts.

However, the minority NPP in parliament suspected that the various amounts quoted by the government were over inflated compared to those quoted on the aircraft manufacturing company’s website which were much lower.

In an exclusive interview with Daily Guide in Takoradi recently, Mr. Awuku said the government’s decision to purchase the aircrafts was indefensible considering the harsh social and economic realities in the country.

He noted that it would be a dangerous adventure for government to purchase more aircrafts for the Ghana Air Force at this time when the country’s economy was in shambles. “The majority of Ghanaians are poorer and the country is worse-off than before so it will be a stab in the back of the people for government to carry out this decision,” he added.

The NPP deputy communications director alleged that there had been an upsurge of prostitution and a general breakdown of social values in most parts of Ghana as a result of the economic hardships the people were going through under the current NDC government.

Mr. Awuku described the Mills-led administration as “heartless and wicked” for deteriorating the quality of life of the average Ghanaian within a space of the two and a half years that it had been in power.

He therefore called on Ghanaians particularly those in the Western region to send the ruling NDC back into opposition in the 2012 elections to help the party work out its leadership problems and re-organize itself as a political party.
