Exclusive: Arrest looms for former State Police aviation leader . Retired State Police major, former top pilot, is target of investigation into theft at air unit

COLONIE -- The former head of the State Police Aviation Unit is expected to be arrested this week on larceny charges related to equipment that was taken from the unit's headquarters at Albany International Airport.

Two people with knowledge of the matter said Robert Kreppein, 47, who abruptly retired last month at the rank of major, has been under investigation by State Police for allegations that he sold a global-positioning satellite device that had belonged to the agency.

Kreppein, a former Orange County resident, could not be reached for comment.

A State Police spokesman said information regarding Kreppein would be made available Wednesday but he declined further comment.

Kreppein was a top State Police pilot who headed the aviation unit for several years prior to his retirement.

He left the job not long after the New York Post reported Kreppein was the target of an internal investigation regarding the sanctioning of State Police helicopter flights for civilians.

Several people familiar with the issue said the practice of allowing civilians, including relatives of State Police members, to ride on board helicopters during patrol or transport flights was a routine practice that dates back decades.
