NEAR TABLE ROCK LAKE, Missouri - Investigators with the Missouri Highway Patrol say a pilot involved in a plane crash on Tuesday night was booked for operating an aircraft while intoxicated.

Troopers arrested James L. Porter, 44 of Wichita, Kansas. He suffered moderate injuries. One passenger suffered minor injuries.

The crash happened on a private runway off of Stallion Bluff Road on Monday. The plane crashed in the woods. Investigators say Porter attempted to land the plane with a tailwind. They say he tried to make a u-turn to land with a headwind and the plane went into a stall.

Investigators say Porter exhibited signs of intoxication at the scene after walking away from the crash. After refusing a breathalyzer test, officers booked him into the Stone County Jail and did a blood draw. Investigators have not released the blood alcohol level.

He does not face formal charges as the Federal Aviation Administration investigates the crash.

  1. Took him to jail and then released him few hours later with no bond. Apparently flying and drinking are not as serious as drinking and driving.

    1. Probably waiting for blood test to come back to determine degree of criminal charges.

  2. Once the plane is determined to be inoperable he is no longer considered a "flight risk".
