On July 26, 2021, about 1400 central daylight time, a Cessna 140, N72129, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The airline transport pilot was seriously injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight.
According to the pilot, he completed a preflight inspection of the airplane prior to the flight with no anomalies noted. In addition, he stated there was about 14 gallons of fuel in the airplane and 4 quarts of oil. On the initial climb after the second takeoff, about 100 ft above ground level, the engine “sputtered,” lost total power, and the propeller continued to turn. The pilot executed a forced landing onto a road; however, during the approach the airplane struck a wire pitching the airplane down and impacting the road. The airplane slid about 300 ft and came to rest in the upright position. The airplane incurred substantial damage to the fuselage and wing struts.
The airframe and engine were recovered and will be examined.
