On May 12, 2021, about 1745 eastern daylight time, a Cessna 172 airplane; N6344E, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident in Johnson City, Tennessee. The student pilot was not injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 instructional flight.

The student pilot was on a solo flight. He had flown earlier from Johnson City Airport (0A4), Johnson City, Tennessee to Greeneville Municipal Airport (GCY), Greeneville, Tennessee, and had returned to 0A4 for a full stop landing.

According to the student pilot, he touched down on runway 22 at 0A4 approximately 1/3 of the way down the runway. After touchdown, he shut off the carburetor heat and retracted the flaps. He then applied both brakes, but only the right brake engaged. The airplane then began to veer to the right. He tried the left brake again, but nothing happened, so he released the brakes and initiated a go-around. However, he was not able to gain enough altitude to clear a tree at the end of the runway. The airplane impacted the tree with the right wing and eventually came to rest in an inverted position, and he was able to exit the airplane without injury.
