AIRPLANE CRASH PRESS RELEASE 

WHAT:  
One Unit Airplane Crash

WHERE: 
An Open Farm Field, east of West Phillips Ferry Road and just north of Interstate 72 milepost 43, Scott County

WHEN:
Nov. 19, 2020 at approximately 7:59 p.m. 

VEHICLE: Unit 1- 2000 Yellow Vans RV6A Winged Aircraft

PILOT:         
Unit 1- Matthew B. Smith, 44-year-old male of Dallas, TX 

PRELIMINARY:    

A preliminary investigation indicates the following occurred:  Illinois State Police responded to a one-unit small airplane crash in an open farm field. Unit 1 was flying southwest when the aircraft began to experience a fuel problem. The pilot attempted to make a landing in an open farm field. The front end of the aircraft dug into the recently tilled field causing the aircraft to overturn before coming to rest on its top. There were no reported injuries. The Federal Aviation Administration was notified of the incident. There is no further information available at this time.


WINCHESTER — A Dallas, Texas, man was able to escape injury when he had to make an emergency landing Thursday in a Scott County field.

Matthew B. Smith, 44, of Dallas was flying southwest when his yellow Vans RV6A aircraft experienced a fuel problem about 8 p.m., according to Illinois State Police.

Smith was able to maneuver the airplane to an open field east of Phillips Ferry Road north of Interstate 72. The front end of the aircraft dug into recently tilled soil and the airplane overturned before coming to rest on its top, according to state police.

The Federal Aviation Administration has been notified of the crash.

One man survived a single-engine plane crash last night in rural Scott County.

The Illinois State Police report that a Vans RV-6A experimental aircraft piloted by 44 year old Matthew B. Smith of Dallas, Texas crashed into an open farm field east of West Phillips Ferry Road and just north of Interstate 72 near the Twin Eagles Bridge in Scott County at approximately 7:59PM.

The Vans RV-6A dug into a recently tilled field on impact causing it to overturn before coming to rest on its top. Smith reported no injuries.

According to ISP District 20 reports, the Federal Aviation Administration has been notified of the incident. 

There is no further information about why the aircraft went down at this time.
