On September 23, 2020, about 1145 eastern daylight time, an experimental, amateur-built Glasair 1RG, N324DJ, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident at Hagerstown Regional Airport-Richard A Henson Field (HGR), Hagerstown, Maryland. The pilot and passenger were not injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight.
According to the pilot, the airplane had been at HGR for repair. On the day of the accident, he conducted a preflight inspection of the airplane in the repair station’s hangar, and after a few “adjustments,” he was ready to conduct a test flight. The pilot stated that he took off from HGR and stayed in the airport traffic pattern conducting touch-and-go landings; after the third takeoff the airplane experienced a total loss of engine power, the pilot turned toward runway 02, but the airplane impacted the ground about 100 ft before the runway.
Initial examination of the airplane by a Federal Aviation Administration inspector revealed that all major components of the airplane were located at the accident site. The airplane remained mostly intact, with a defined break in the fuselage behind the two cabin seats.
The wreckage was retained for further examination.
