On September 24, 2020, at 1624 Pacific daylight time, a Great Lakes 2T1A biplane, N3617L, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport (KMYF), San Diego, CA. The flight instructor and pilot received serious injuries and the airplane sustained substantial damage during the forced landing. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of
Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight.

According to the pilot, the engine failed after liftoff approximately 300 ft above the runway. The instructor pilot immediately took the controls and executed a 180-degree turn back to the runway. The airplane subsequently hit a tree and came to rest upright in an area outside the airport perimeter.
