Aircraft: Cessna 177RG

Flight Conducted Under: Part 91: General Aviation - Instructional

On February 18, 2020, about 1900 central standard time, a Cessna 177RG airplane, N2763V, sustained substantial damage when the landing gear collapsed during landing rollout on runway 26R at the Spirit of St. Louis Airport (SUS), Chesterfield, Missouri. The student pilot and flight instructor were not injured. The airplane was registered to and operated by private individuals as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 instructional flight. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and the flight was not operated on a flight plan. The local flight originated from SUS about 1800.

The flight instructor reported that while on short final, he checked that the gear handle was down and the landing gear down indicator (green) light was illuminated. He looked out of the side window and the right landing gear appeared to be fully extended. The airplane touched down about 500 feet short of the 1,000-foot markers on runway 26R, and as the airplane was rolling out the landing gear collapsed.

The student pilot reported that the instructor "called out green clear to land" as the airplane crossed the airport perimeter fence on final approach. The student pilot completed a before landing "GUMPS" check and placed his hand on the landing gear lever to insure it was in the down position. Landing touchdown was "soft;" however, the airplane started "sinking" during the rollout. The belly of the airplane and the propeller subsequently contacted the ground.

Further examination of the landing gear is planned.
