On September 12, 2019, about 1410 mountain daylight, a Bell 206B, N100CK, landed hard following a loss of engine power near Hill City, South Dakota. The pilot and passenger were not injured, and the helicopter was substantially damaged. The helicopter was registered to an LLC and operated by a private individual under the provisions of Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the personal flight, which operated without a flight plan.

According to information provided by the pilot, while performing a landing to a field and about 20 ft above ground level, the engine stopped producing power. The helicopter descended, landed hard, and rolled on its side. Substantial damage was sustained to the fuselage and tail boom.

The helicopter was retained for further examination.

Hill City crews responded to a helicopter crash Thursday afternoon. 

The Hill City Volunteer Fire Department posted to its Facebook page Thursday that a helicopter had crashed just west of Hill City. 

The two occupants got out with minor injuries, the post said. 

The helicopter, however, was heavily damaged.
