On June 12, 2019, about 1435 Pacific daylight time, a Cessna 140 tailwheel equipped airplane, N73053, sustained substantial damage during the landing roll out at the Independence State Airport (7S5), Independence, Oregon. The certified flight instructor (CFI) and student pilot/owner were not injured. The airplane was registered to and operated by the owner under the provisions of Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91, as an instructional flight. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the local area flight and no flight plan had been field. The flight originated from 7S5 about 1300.

According to the CFI, they had flown to Newport Municipal Airport (ONP), Newport, Oregon, did a touch-and-go landing, flew up the coast toward Lincoln, Oregon, and back to 7S5. The landing at ONP was normal. The CFI reported that the landing at 7S5 was also normal; however, on the landing roll out, as the airplane was slowing down and they were exiting the runway, there was a loud "clunk." The airplane slid sideways, bounced and then ground looped. The airplane came to a stop off to the right side of the runway. The CFI stated that the right wheel assembly separated at the axle.

The student pilot reported that he had purchased the airplane in April 2019 and was flying 1 -3 times a week working toward his private pilot certificate. During the previous flights, there had been no issues.
