Rescuers hoisted a pilot to safety via helicopter after an emergency landing in a wash alongside the San Gabriel Valley Airport in El Monte on Thursday.
The airplane experienced engine failure shortly after 5 p.m., Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department officials said via social media.
It ended up landing in the Rio Hondo Wash just outside the airport, on top of several inches of fast-moving water, as viewed in aerial footage from Sky5.
The pilot, Jose Ramos, managed to get out of the aircraft unharmed before paramedics used a helicopter to hoist him out of the wash.
He said he's been flying several times a week for a decade.
"The engine sputtered and it seems that I ran out of fuel on one of the tanks," he said. "So I switched to the other side and it wouldn’t restart."
With only seconds to react as the aircraft lost altitude, Ramos said he spotted a busy street, a school and the wash as possible landing areas. He aimed for the wash.
"I was just concerned about hurting someone else," he said.
"It happened so fast because your so low," Ramos said. "It wasn’t like you have 30 seconds. You have 10 seconds to react."
Though he was fortunate to escape injury, "They pulled me out with a helicopter, which was kind of embarrassing," he said.
He likened the landing to the Log Ride at the Knott's Berry Farm amusement park.

A pilot aboard a small plane was safe after the aircraft went down in an El Monte riverbed near the airport Thursday afternoon.
The plane went down in the Rio Hondo wash in the 4900 block of Santa Anita Avenue, El Monte police said.
The Beechcraft A36 Bonanza was seen in a riverbed not far from San Gabriel Valley Airport.
The pilot reported the engine had suddenly quit and he was forced to land.
He reported over radio frequency that he was not injured.
The Federal Aviation Administration was to conduct an investigation into the landing, a spokesman said.

Switching to and verifying the fuller tank prior to take off is part if standard procedure in most aircraft. In fact it's mentioned twice in the checklist of the A36 Bonanza. Another pilot genius gets lucky.
ReplyDeleteMay very well have been on the fuller tank for takeoff, but takeoff was an hour and a half before this happened.
ReplyDeleteBut yeah, it's still pilot error, poor fuel management. Happens all the time. People are forgetful/careless. Don't wait for the engine to sputter out before switching tanks.
Glad it ended well and he only suffered some embarrassment and probably a hefty recovery bill to get the plane out of there.
Fuel management has got to be the singular easiest tast ever. I’ve got 6 tanks in my bonanza, i time fuel consumption always leaving the left main with no less than 15 gallons. Timer+fuel totalizer+tablet=common sense.
