Flight Conducted Under: Part 91: General Aviation - Personal

On May 22, 2019, about 0936 mountain daylight time, a Cessna 195 airplane, N1008D, departed the runway surface and collided with terrain while landing at the Socorro Municipal Airport (ONM), Socorro, New Mexico. The commercial pilot was not injured, and the airplane sustained substantial damage to the left wing. The airplane was registered to and operated by the pilot as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan was filed. The flight originated from Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport (LBB), Lubbock, Texas with a fuel stop at ONM, and a destination of Payson Airport (PAN), Payson Arizona.

During the approach to land the pilot noted that the wind was calm. The airplane touched down onto the runway fast and bounced. As the airplane settled back onto the runway surface it started to veer to the right. He added left rudder input and brake action, but the left pedal went all the way down and was not effective. The airplane exited the right side of the runway and ground looped. Subsequently, the left main landing gear separated from the airplane. After the pilot exited the airplane, he noted that the wind had picked up.

The airplane was removed to a secure location for further examination.
