Illinois State Police District 22 Ullin

Not a call officers get everyday. Last night District 22 officers responded to a incident involving an emergency landing by a plane on Interstate 57.

A Cessna 150M occupied by 2 pilots was on approach to land at Cairo airport when the pilot experienced loss of power/engine failure. The pilot made and emergency landing onto I-57 southbound near mile post 5. The occupants were uninjured and the aircraft was not damaged as a result of the landing. I-57 S/B was limited to 1 lane of traffic for approximately 2.5 hours. The aircraft was safely towed from the roadway and the Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident.

PULASKI COUNTY, Illinois — A single-engine plane had to make an emergency landing on Interstate 57 in Pulaski County, Illinois, Monday night after the sheriff’s office says the aircraft experienced power failure.

The first call about the plane came in to dispatchers around 8:26 p.m. The plane landed at the 5 mile marker of I-57 southbound. A Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office dispatcher says the two people flying the aircraft were able to land safely and get it mostly off of the road. The right lane of I-57 was blocked for a time by one of the plane’s wings, but the road is back open to traffic.

Illinois State Police say the road was down to one lane for about two hours and 30 minutes. The state agency notes that the plane is a Cessna 150M, and it was not damaged in the landing.

The Pulaski County dispatcher says no injuries were reported, and the plane was towed to the Cairo Regional Airport.

Illinois State Police, Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office and Mounds Police Department responded to the scene.

ISP says the Federal Aviation Administration is looking into the incident.
