SARASOTA, FL (WWSB) - Emergency crews are on the scene in Newtown where a helicopter had to make an emergency landing.

According to a spokesperson for Sarasota County Fire, a helicopter landed safely on railroad tracks at MLK and Leon Avenue in the Newtown Community, around 4:15 Friday afternoon. Fire officials say they were called to the scene for a crash, but on the way they were advised it had landed safely near the railroad tracks.

Fire officials say the two-seat helicopter was in the air for a training flight and had the flight instructor and one student aboard. While in the air, a check engine light came on, prompting the instructor to feel she could not return safely to the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport.

Currently, a mechanic is heading to the scene to determine if the aircraft can be safely flown.

Though it is next to active railroad tracks, fire officials say they are mostly used for maintenance and there is no concern of a collision.
