On June 3, 2018, about 1018 eastern daylight time, a Globe GC-1B, N96DS, sustained substantial damage when the landing gear collapsed during landing at the Albert Whitted Airport (SPG), St Petersburg, Florida. The two pilots on board were not injured. The airplane was registered to and operated by the pilot, under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91, as a personal flight. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan was filed for the local flight.

According to the pilot, shortly after takeoff, the airplane experienced an electrical failure and he returned to SPG. Due to the electrical failure, he manually extended the landing gear. The tower confirmed that the landing gear appeared extended. Subsequently, during the landing roll, the left main landing gear collapsed.

The airplane was recovered to a secure storage facility for further examination.
